Farmers Markets Matter.
Direct to consumer sales account for an important share of farm revenue and at a time when many farmers are struggling to stay afloat, AFT has seen that producers who participate in markets have a better chance of succeeding.
Not only are we seeing a link between the success of farmers that participate in direct to consumer sales, we have seen that farms closest to America’s cities are often providing of the food found at farmers markets.
Those very same farms at your local markets are directly in the path of development. AFT wants to use this celebration to raise awareness about the vital link between farmers and our local food, and the pressures they face to sell to developers.
American Farmland Trust knows all too well that farmland and ranchland is vanishing beneath our feet. We lose 3 acres of farmland and ranchland every minute. Among the almost 31 million acres lost between 1992-2012, nearly 11 million acres was some of the best land for intensive food and crop production. That’s why the Farmers Market Celebration is seeking to elevate the importance of farmer’s markets to both the success of farmers, and for everyone who eats!
American Farmland Trust launched the conservation agriculture movement. We have helped permanently protect over 6.5 million acres of farmland and ranchland, and reduced development pressure on over 300 million additional acres. We have championed environmentally sound farming practices that are now used on farms of all sizes across the nation. We’ve had a positive impact on over 500,000 farmers and ranchers.
