This was the first year for the Bedford, VA Farmer’s Market to offer the SNAP Double Bucks program. SNAP is the supplemental nutrition assistance program (formerly “food stamps”). With double bucks, a SNAP recipient could spend $5 and get $10 worth of fresh produce, eggs or meat. The result went way beyond expectations. The SNAP recipients loved it and the vendors loved it. As of 9/23/16, SNAP purchases amounted to $2339 for a total of $4678. For a very small Farmer’s market that’s sensational. Hats off to Market Manager Paul Stern and supporters like CENTRA Health and the Bedford Community Health Foundation for making it happen!
I love the small, family-feel of the Bedford Farmers Market. Everyone I have talked to is raving about the great hamburger samples made with local ground beef that were cooked and handed out on August 5th. The Friday Food Trucks have made the Market a great place to grab lunch with co-workers while shopping for “local” groceries for the weekend.
Real farmers, real local produce and handcrafts, really friendly people, really great food trucks on Fridays and always something new. The latest? Folks w/ SNAP benefits now have access to the good stuff, too!
